Every souvenir shop sells Africa. We sold the people who made it.

Aafricaa is a contemporary African design emporium in The Alfred at the V&A Waterfront, carrying fashion, homeware and gifting from designers, ceramicists, weavers and beaders across the continent. Every object in it belongs to someone else's brand. That's the commercial problem underneath the beautiful one: in a curated store, the curation is the product, and until a customer trusts the eye behind the shelf, the store is competing on foot traffic against every other door in a tourist precinct. We came in as a full-stack partner, which meant we weren't producing content for Aafricaa. We were building the brand that sells everything inside it.

How we executed the project

The value of every piece in the store sits in who made it and how, and nothing on a shelf communicates that on its own, so we built a content system to carry it. We structured the output into defined pillars, editorial, Meet the Makers, general culture, interviews and Spotify playlists, so the brand ran on a fixed rhythm rather than a feed reacting to whatever was in stock that week.
The centrepiece was Meet the Maker, a direct response campaign built around the people behind every brand stocked in-store and online. We went into each maker's origin story and the why behind the work, so a customer wasn't looking at a product, they were looking at a decision someone made and a skill someone spent years earning. That's what gives an object weight, and weight is what makes a price make sense. Alongside it we captured the activations and product launches in-store, treating the physical space as the top of the funnel rather than the end of it. A store at the Waterfront gets what most e-commerce brands never get, which is people standing inside the brand, so every moment in the room was built to be distributed for weeks afterwards.
Over eight months the work delivered 229.7K views on Instagram, with reach up 47.9% and content interactions up 100%, alongside 1,300 new followers. But the number that mattered most was where the audience lived. Close to 40% of the Instagram following sat outside South Africa, led by the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Australia.
